Bubba Wallace endured a frustrating outing during last week's NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta after a penalty derailed what had been a promising afternoon. However, he has now opened up about the incident and the lesson he learned from it.
Wallace started last weekend's Quaker State 400 in 22nd. He was running in the top three spots in the final stage of the race, but it was during this that Ty Gibbs hit him in the back of his car, which forced him to cross the double yellow line on the inside. This resulted in a penalty for Wallace, and he finished the race at the tail end in 29th.
He completely disagreed with the penalty post-race. However, after a meeting with NASCAR officials, he accepted his fate. During his pre-race media availability in North Wilkesboro this weekend, Steven Taranto questioned him about his final thoughts on the penalty.
"I mean, kind of have to (accept it), right," Wallace said in a video shared by Taranto on X. "I mean, it is what it is. We got a better understanding of the rule. To me, I always thought it was gaining position, but no, it's gaining track position, which I totally did. So it is what it is.

"I thought they would care about the data that (showed) I tried to give it back, but the damage was already done. So it’s unfortunate, but here we are."
This penalty not only cost him another podium finish this season but also 27 points that are crucial for the upcoming playoffs. After 20 races this season, the No. 23 driver stands in 13th in the NASCAR Cup Series driver standings, just 55 points above the Chase cutoff line (Top 16).
FOX's Eric Brennan weighs in on Bubba Wallace’s penalty
Bubba Wallace’s penalty in Atlanta sparked a major debate across the NASCAR garage, and FOX Broadcaster Eric Brennan voiced his opinion about the same.
During his appearance on the "Door, Bumper, Clear" podcast on July 14, Brennan looked back on the incident where Wallace crossed the yellow line.
"I hate the rule, and I’ve hated it for a while," he said. "And it’s been in place for 25 years. Obvious reasons why it was put in place initially. But the other thing to consider is, you mentioned consistency."
He further spoke about how the same rule is not consistently applied across all the divisions of NASCAR.
"I feel like this, along with the lock and bumpers thing we had in Trucks and O’Reilly for so long, was never consistently able to be officiated," the FOX Broadcaster said. "I saw people pulling clips from this year where drivers dipped two wheels below the line, did not get called. In this case, Bubba, he left skid marks behind him because he was out of control."
While Bubba Wallace seems to have accepted the penalty and moved on, the rule continues to stir conversation across the NASCAR garage.
