Dale Earnhardt Jr. is here with another surprise proposal that can take over the NASCAR world. He has called for a complete overhaul of the All-Star Race after a controversial weekend at Dover left many fans wondering as to whether the event had gotten way too complicated for a fun weekend of racing.
NASCAR’s combination of the 350-lap format with multiple resets and stage calculations left many scratching their heads, in the garage, on the track, and on televisions across America.
Earnhardt Jr. believes that the solution to this problem is not to introduce more complex tasks, but rather to strip the event back to its historical roots. On Tuesday's episode of his "Dale Jr. Download" podcast, he said:
"We’re doing too much. The '87 race is legendary. The (1992) One Hot Night was a legendary race. All those were simple formats -- 50 laps, 25 laps, 10. You have your Open, you have another support series there, you can have your Trucks, your O'Reillys, whatever. That’s all it needs to be."

Further making suggestions for the scheduling of the race on Wednesday night before the Coca-Cola 600 and the 20 entrants, Earnhardt Jr. added:
"We’ll have an Open, and we'll take the winner out of the Open. Not f****** second or third, the guy who won the Open gets in. So there’s 19 locked in and the winner of The Open to go race for a million bucks. That’s all you need to do on a Wednesday night."
Even though the two-time Daytona 500 winner wants more changes to the All-Star race, he went on to defend the legacy of this American race.
How the All-Star Race Helped Shape Modern NASCAR
Since its debut as "The Winston" way back in 1985, NASCAR’s All-Star Race has become one of the most historic stock car racing events, even featuring in Hollywood movies such as Cars.
It has produced several legendary moments, such as Dale Earnhardt’s 1987 "Pass in the Grass," Davey Allison’s dramatic 1992 victory under the lights, and Jeff Gordon’s infamous 1997 "T-Rex" car that ultimately led to it being outlawed later.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. strongly defended preserving the historical importance of the event, saying:
"But most importantly, I don't want them to get rid of the All-Star Race. And you know why? For everyone who won it, it's a kick in the b****, man. It's like getting rid of the Daytona 500… It's a legendary race."
Not only historically, but the All-Star Race also serves another greater purpose as NASCAR’s testing ground. Ideas such as double-file restarts, eliminations, and even pit strategies are tried out here before being implemented in the Cup Series.
Winners such as Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson, and Denny Hamlin elevated this event from another race to an essential part of NASCAR and American culture that cannot be forgotten and deserves to be reiterated year after year.
