5 big reasons the horsepower cut might actually be game-changing for NASCAR

NASCAR fans don’t like the horsepower cut in place for the August race at Daytona International Speedway, mainly because they feel that less horsepower means slower cars. 

However, that isn’t the case, as the horsepower reduction from 510 hp to 465 hp is intended to make the present generation of cars as racy as cars of yesteryear at superspeedways. 

To break down why these changes are in the correct direction, here are five ways in which racing is likely to become more interesting.

Spoiler modification impacts

The current spoilers that Cup cars use are 7 inches. What this does is create a massive vacuum for following cars. When a car exits this vacuum zone, there is usually a loss of momentum. 

With the soiler size reduced to 4 inches, the drag from the leading car reduces significantly, meaning the trailing cars don’t lose as much momentum, prompting side-by-side racing.

More overtaking

One of the biggest data points to come out of the Daytona 500 this year was a significant 13mph difference in speed between cars running alone and cars running in the pack. 

With the drop in horsepower, that difference comes down to 10- 11 mph. Even that tiny difference will make it more effective for drivers to attempt and complete passes. 

Tighter pack

In a breakdown for Motorsport, Bozi Tatarevic in a post on X ,explained how the successful change to the NOAPS packages has been proof of the pudding for the changes set to come in the Cup series. 

The previous Genn-6 package came at about 450 hp, and the current NOAPS package is at around 410. While there may be several complaints around the NOAPS, none are around the racing, because the series provides some of the closest and most exciting races. Meaning the HP reduction isn’t a bad thing. 

Bye-bye fuel saving?

The biggest problem that fans have with superspeedway racing is that it’s mainly drafting and drivers lifting to save fuel, in effect going slower than they should, which seems pretty anti-racing. 

Now, with the reduced drag and horsepower, another thing that becomes less relevant is drivers heavily relying on the downforce. With the way things are likely to be set up, the cars will be in a position where defensive racing will be detrimental, meaning attack will be the only option.

Optimal power = higher single-car acceleration

The changes combine to affect the efficiency of the car in a way that earlier over-revving and gear shifts prevented the car from running on its optimal power for longer stretches in clean air. 

Now that the power, drag, and downforce are all reduced, it creates a zone where the car can attain higher acceleration speeds in clean are as compared to the speeds achieved by running in the slip stream.

While the impact of the changes can be analysed, the proof of the pudding will come when NASCAR returns to Daytona in August.
