Ford Reveals Cobra Jet 2200 With EV Power Amid NASCAR Future Talks

Ford Racing has officially debuted the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200. This 2,200-horsepower electric drag car arrives as NASCAR officials weigh a major shift toward electrification.

NASCAR’s EVP John Probst recently hinted that a change may come to the second-tier O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Series, while comparing to the Truck and Cup Series.

"If you look at the brand identity of those three [national series], the O’Reilly Series struggles a little bit just from the car perspective and you see it a lot because we refer to it often as whoever the entitlement sponsor is."

In 2024, NASCAR launched the EV prototype as a car they look to for the future. Chevrolet and Ford have already started building bodies around it.

And Ford has gone several steps further by launching a beast of an EV, the Ford Racing Mustang Cobra Jet 2200. Yes, 2200 is the amount of horsepower under the hood.

While the car looks like it has every bit of Ford DNA, it doesn’t have an engine. But it has a top speed of over 221 mph and a quarter-mile time record of 6.87 seconds. It’s lighter than its predecessors, the Cobra Jet 1400 and 1800.

It will be introduced during the NHRA 4-wide National, making its drag race debut in Charlotte. The aim with this would be to study the car as much as possible, tuning it towards top performance if the NOAPS turns electric. 

Dale Jr. Says Don’t Fix What’s Not Broken

Dale Jr. has long been one of the most vocal figures in the sport, and as the owner of JR Motorsports, who compete in NOAPS, Dale Jr. thinks this move could be detrimental.

Speaking on his podcast, Junior said, “I would say that the O’Reilly Series has got a lot of good things going right now. Viewership is continuously on the rise, and our cars we can all kind of relate to those cars when we look at them, when we see them on the race track.”

Dale Jr. said, “I’m certainly not interested in that car or that body or any of that… Quit fiddling with everything and feeling like everything needs to be improved, fixed, changed. The series is doing really good.”
