Over the years, NASCAR has had several debates. However, the legacy debate between Kyle Busch and Richard Petty does not seem to be settling any time soon. And now, the NASCAR broadcaster Eric Brennan has weighed in on the debate. 

“Steve O’Donnell said at the briefing that Kyle texted him Tuesday and said, ‘You should really have an over-40 rule cause I really want to run the whole truck season, and he probably would have been the first driver to win a championship in all three series," he said, when he was questioned by Freddie Kraft if Busch’s wins are more impressive than Petty’s.  

The Busch v/s Petty debate began way back in 2019 when the late two-time champion claimed his 200th victory at the NASCAR National Series. With the victory, he equalled Petty's record of 200 wins. But the debate has reopened after Busch's untimely death earlier this week. 

“I think the era Kyle did it in has been tougher," Brennan continued. "The toughest and the most competitive we've ever seen our sport, so not to take anything away from what Richard accomplished and the number of times they were racing in a calendar year, they would race in back then I would say so.”

To put it into perspective, Busch has 234 career wins across all of NASCAR’s divisions over the last 27 years in 1313 starts. While Richard Petty got his 200 wins over his 35-year racing career in 1185 race starts. 

That said, comparing the two drivers strictly through statistics is difficult because of the major differences in scheduling between their eras.

In Petty’s time, some seasons featured as many as 48 races, while others had around 30. Modern NASCAR schedules, by comparison, have remained far more stable and consistent from year to year.

In the end, there may never be a clear-cut answer, as the debate largely comes down to personal opinion.

NASCAR Takes a Tough Call After Kyle Busch’s Death

Just days after NASCAR lost its winningest driver, the organization has made a tough decision to remove Busch from the points table. 

“NASCAR has removed Kyle Busch from its point standings, a decision made following conversations with RCR about how to handle Busch’s death and being empathetic of the impact to those who would see his name in the standings," the NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass reported on X on May 27. 

Prior to being removed from NASCAR’s website, Busch sat 27th in the Cup Series standings with 217 points. His latest appearance came in the non-points All-Star Race at Dover, where he qualified 23rd and finished 17th.

This left fans divided as some argued that it was the right decision, as it would be painful to watch the driver fall down the standings. Others argued that it was not just points standings, but a record of what the late driver had achieved.
