Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron couldn’t hide his frustration about his "junk" car as he vented his feelings over the radio during the NASCAR Cup Series race in Atlanta. His back-and-forth with his crew chief, Rudy Fugle, quickly became a highly talked-about moment among fans.

Byron started the Quaker State 400 at Echo Park Speedway in 26th place. He managed to make up places during the race and reached 19th before the race was red-flagged due to lightning in the area.

But shortly before the race was red-flagged, the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports driver took to his team radio to share an irate message about the performance of the car.

"This is junk. Absolutely f****** junk," he said, as heard in a video shared by reporter Kelly Crandall on X.

His crew chief, Rudy Fugle, acknowledged the criticism and gave him an update on the weather conditions and the race stage.

"Copy that. Do what you can. Lightning is close, not quite halfway," he said.

In response, Byron sent another frustrated message, saying, "Plowing my a** off, this is terrible."

This time, Fugle wasn't patient or measured in his reply.

"I f****** heard you, OK!? I heard you! I got it!" he shouted. "You're five numbers loose, I put a round in the left rear, we're too tight right now! It's the tight offset! We can park it, or we can keep trying until I get to work on it again! Just drive the f****** thing!"

Byron ended the heated exchange with a three-word response. He replied to Fugle, saying,

"You got it."

This exchange quickly caught NASCAR fans' attention.

Many fans gave their take on the frustrated exchange, as one fan explained that this is the first time they have seen the Hendrick Motorsports star so annoyed.

They wrote, "I was gonna say, as a Willy B fan, I haven't heard him get that frustrated in a long time."

While another fan pointed out that the Chevrolet cars have been lacking when it comes to speed during the 2026 campaign.

"Don't blame them tbh, idk if it has to do with the new Chevy body design but the cars just don't have any speed," they wrote. 

Another took a dig at NASCAR's decision not to have any practice sessions at Atlanta because of its Superspeedway setup, adding,

"If they had at least one practice session, this could've been avoided."

One fan felt Byron’s outburst towards Rudy Fugle was justified, as they felt that he had been patient for too long. They said, 

"About time Byron started showing some frustration towards Fugle. He's given Byron trash cars this year."

Another criticized Fugle’s handling of the situation, arguing that the crew chief should have remained composed.

"Can’t be losing your cool like that as the crew chief. You are the leader of the team. Very raw but pretty embarrassing from Rudy," they wrote.
