Having won 7 titles with Rick Hendrick, it was natural that Jimmie Johnson would look to him for advice.
On Stacking Pennies, Johnson spoke about how he tries to do things similar to Rick Hendrick, who has an automotive office along with Hendrick Motorsports, yet spends the majority of his time at HMS.
“He spends two-thirds of his week at HMS wandering around involved, taking meetings. The way that it really is a family business, as large as it is, the way he’s always there, he leads by example, and that’s something I’m really trying to do."
This has been Hendrick's policy since he purchased his first Chevrolet dealership. Since then, he's turned it into a massive car business, created and developed the most successful NASCAR team, and even taken it to Le Mans!
Hendrick was unparalleled as a manager of people. Once, when crew Chief Chad Knaus and Jimmie Johnson were endlessly arguing, he presented them with cookies and milk, saying, "If we're going to act like kids, then we're going to take a break here and have milk and cookies."
Johnson still consults Hendrick on decisions, “I’ve gone to him with every major decision I’ve made business-wise since I’ve left, even the partnership with Carvana.”
Johnson’s LMC team featured Chevrolet cars till 2024, when Toyota became their car of choice, and Johnson said that there were meetings between him and Rick about alliances between the Chevys and how Hendrick was there for him right through the ownership journey.
LMC Ties Up With McLaren
Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club has signed a significant partnership to feature in the greatest spectacle in racing later this year with a fourth entry for Arrow McLaren.
The partnership will see the #31 Chevrolet carrying branding and support from LMC with 2014 Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay. The tie-up will see 2015 Indy-winning race engineer Brian Campe, who will join the fold from LMC/Hendrick, and select members of LMC’s NASCAR pit crew undergo training with Arrow McLaren to service the car during the race in May.
For Johnson, this allows LMC to maintain its presence in top-tier open wheel racing, on the back of its collaboration with teams like HMS. The partnership will bring together former Chip Ganassi IndyCar teammate Jimmie Johnson and Tony Kanaan, who is currently the Arrow McLaren team principal.
