Health is often a delicate topic in any working culture, and even more so in the sports broadcasting business. Veteran FOX Broadcaster and former crew chief Larry McReynolds has now opened up about a frightening health scare earlier in the season.
In an interaction with motorsport.com, McReynolds recalled not feeling well on the morning of the COTA race weekend. Although he pushed through and performed his broadcast commitments, he decided to seek medical attention. It was then revealed that he had been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy.
“I’m good, and I’ve talked about it openly on our radio show, but the cliff notes version is that basically on the morning of the (Circuit of the Americas) race, back in March, I woke up in my hotel room and knew something was not right. I wasn’t sure what. I went to the racetrack and did the broadcast, but I was just tired.
I got back to hotel, got dinner at the lobby bar, and called it an early night. The bottom line is that I woke up on Monday morning and found out that I had Bell’s palsy, so I called my doctor, and he told me to come straight to his office. They had me on a steroid by noon, and it was all but gone by one week and was back to normal by week two.”

In the same interaction, McReynolds added that the experience was a good wake-up call for him and urged people to get treated the moment they see any symptoms.
The belief that health should be the number-one priority has gotten stronger with Kyle Busch’s sudden passing. At the end of the race at Watkins Glen, he was heard asking for medical assistance.
McReynolds' message to the audience is also strikingly similar to what another celebrated figure in the automobile industry recently said.
Jeremy Clarkson urges men to get tested
In an interaction with The Sunday Times, Clarkson said he felt incredibly lucky to have escaped death. Besides the prostate cancer diagnosis in the season finale, he also referenced the first episode of season five, in which he was rushed to the hospital after a suspected heart attack.
After that, in a short clip posted on X, he shared an update on his health, assuring the audience that he is perfectly healthy and also urging men specifically to get checked, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms.
“And the reason why I'm fine is because the doctor caught the prostate cancer early, and they caught it early because I got tested. Now I know a lot of you will say, 'Eww, I don't want to be tested...but it's just a blood test these days.
"And if you go to your doctor and he says, 'Well I'm not going to test you because you don't have any symptoms and you're not in a high-risk category,' just lie. Say you've got symptoms. Say that you have to get up 32 times in the night for a wee and there's some dribbling.”
