Kyle Busch Throwback: How 'Rowdy' Scripted an Unprecedented Title Run in 2015

Kyle Busch has had many memorable wins in the NASCAR series. However, his 2015 Sprint Cup Series title victory made him believe in his potential.

The then Joe Gibbs Racing driver won the championship after finishing in the top four in the last race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Named as ‘Rowdy’ because of his fearless driving style, Busch led 41 laps on the day, including the closing seven, claiming his first postseason win.

“This is just a dream come true, and my family, my wife, my son—to have him this year and to have everything we’ve gone through this year to be in this moment—I don’t know what else to say, but this is so special,” Busch said on the championship stage back in 2015.

He made a comeback in the 2015 season after a serious crash in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series. The crash had left him with a broken left leg and a broken right foot, making him miss the first 11 Sprint Cup races. He made his comeback late in May at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kyle was granted a waiver by NASCAR, allowing him to make the Chase provided he won races and consistently finished in the top 30 during the regular season.

Busch satisfied the latter part of the waiver criteria by breaking into the top 30 in points after Watkins Glen in August. He then secured the Chase position at Darlington, the penultimate race of the regular season.

When Kyle Busch spoke about people discrediting his 2015 title win

Busch clinched the 2015 championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway by outperforming the other Championship 4 drivers, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, and Martin Truex Jr., in the Ford EcoBoost 400.

After his spectacular comeback to win the 2015 Sprint Cup Series, some fans criticized him for not being able to participate in all the races. They went on to raise questions about whether the championship was valid. But Busch did not let it affect him.

"It doesn't bother me. I don't care,” Busch said. “The trophy's sitting at my shop. So, ain't nobody taking that away from me. They can make it as much of an argument as they want to, but the fact of that matter is, NASCAR and all the record books will still say 2015 champion, Kyle Busch.”

At the start of the 2015 season, during the 57th Daytona 500, Kyle Busch was recovering from surgery in a hospital room near the track. By season’s end at Homestead-Miami Speedway, he was celebrating his fifth victory of the year and his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

Hence, Busch’s season-ending success carried deep personal significance.
