If racing on an active naval base wasn't an impressive enough moment for the sport, one viewer decided to enter the track. Now, NASCAR fans have some more clarity, revealing it was someone a driver knew.

While discussing the incident on the Door Bumper Clear podcast, it was revealed that it was someone Sheldon Creed knew.

Tommy Baldwin then recalled, “Yeah, so you guys know the story? Oh, that was wild. The guy jumped the fence. His friend’s with Sheldon. Yeah. He knew him growing up, right? The guy thought the race was over and jumped the fence and asked him, said, ‘What are you doing? Race is over, right?’”

While Creed didn't confirm if he was indeed friends with the track invader, he did have a conversation with him. Creed asked the invader to get a better look at the damage on the car. Meanwhile, crew chief Jonathan Toney quickly let the officials know the Haas team had nothing to do with the incident.

The group then added, "Sheldon couldn't say at the time it was his friend... He had to play dumb through it all. So when the guy jumped over the fence and went back, Sheldon was like, that boy's in trouble."

Following the short conversation, the fan left the track after giving Creed a fistbump.

However, what caught most people's attention was the fan's feat itself. He didn't just climb the fence on a track. He did so on an active naval base while wearing flip-flops. It was something even members of the Door Bumper Clear podcast were impressed by.

Baldwin stressed the stunt itself, adding, “And I’ll give it to the guy, though. He climbed two fences. Flip-flops. Flip-flops. Then went to the bathroom and came out like nothing happened.”

This event was certainly the most entertaining one that took place during the Cup race. For the fan, however, it has invited serious consequences.

The fan may face serious charges

While the fan was having a conversation with Creed, officials and NCIS were on their way. Acknowledging the same, Bozi Tatarevic said, “Yeah, they had NCIS arresting him.”

Now, race invasions aren't uncommon. We've seen them before at Richmond in 2014, or when a fan jumped on the track and asked Matt Kenseth for an autograph. However, there's one thing that makes this incident bring on bigger consequences.

This may invite federal charges, since the incident took place on an active military installation and federal agents took the fan away.

In any case, this showcased that San Diego promised fans three days of not just entertaining races, but on- and off-track excitement that few other tracks can match.
