Iowa Speedway has always earned a reputation as one of NASCAR's most demanding short tracks when it comes to tire management. Known for its hot and humid summers, Iowa sits in the heart of the U.S. Corn Belt, where the August conditions can seriously add stress on the tires on long runs.

And this time, looking at the weather, drivers and teams will have to once again juggle between speed and conservation.

The max temperatures are not below 83 degrees on the entire weekend. The ‘real feel’ is going up to 99 degrees, and the UV index is also rated very high (9.0). All of this makes tire fall-off a very crucial strategic factor heading into what is the 23^rd race of the season.

According to AccuWeather, the max temperature on Sunday is going up to 88 degrees. What’s more, the humidity is at its peak too. Both these factors could play a big role in tire performance.

The higher temperatures reported on the forecast in the noon hours during the Cup race can cause tires to heat up and wear more quickly. That can ultimately reduce the grip over the course of a run.

Due to this, teams will naturally have to put more emphasis on tire conservation to maintain their pace for the long green-flag runs.

But this isn’t new at Iowa. The 0.875-mile oval short track faced this issue a couple of years ago too. In 2024, KCCI reported that the Cup Series cars faced five separate tire problems on Friday during the practice.

"It is very concerning," said Christopher Bell, who faced tire issues and had to choose a backup car the next day. Even Denny Hamlin was surprised at the time.

How the temperatures look

On Friday, the temperatures will go up to 83 degrees and drop to as low as 65. Precipitation percent is just 7. The RealFeel is 92 degrees, and the max UV index is 9.0, rated very high.

Saturday will be sunnier and humid. The temperature range will be between 84 to 68 degrees. UV index is the same as Friday, and the RealFeel is 97 degrees. The forecast also says the weather will be “uncomfortably humid”.

On the Cup race day, i.e., Sunday, the weather will be mostly sunny. There's an 18 percent chance of rain. RealFeel is 99 degrees, and the UV index remains 9.0.

To tackle these hot conditions, even the fans visiting the venue should stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and light clothing, and seek shade whenever possible.

While the forecast still doesn't alarm for any major weather disruption, this combination of heat and humidity could seriously test the tires and probably make tire management the biggest decisive factor for the outcome.
