Drivers like Shane van Gisbergen or Scott McLaughlin receive a different level of respect from the fans as they come from varied racing backgrounds as opposed to the traditional ladder. One such driver is Gio Ruggiero, the young Tricon Truck driver, who started garnering enormous attention, thanks to his recent performance and close ties with Toyota.

Ruggiero, a driver under the Toyota Racing Development program, has a strong relationship with the manufacturer and, as a result, has solid backing. At just 19, Ruggiero has made quite a name for himself.

Having come from a humble background, Ruggiero made his debut in the NASCAR Truck Series last year and almost won the debut race. However, the season went on, and he did not disappoint.

Ruggiero went on to pick up his maiden victory at Talladega and seven top fives, which earned him 11th place in the Drivers' Standings. Coming into this season, Gio Ruggiero's rise did not stop there as he continued delivering promising results.

The Tricon Garage driver started 2026 with a bang, as he finished as a runner-up in the Daytona race. So far, Ruggiero has three top fives and four top 10s, making him one of the best drivers of the season. With an average starting position of 6.75 and an average finishing position of 10.875, Ruggiero currently stands in fourth place with 257 points after eight races.

But aside from his driving, Ruggiero is also being appreciated for having a personality in a sport that's lacking star power right now.

“ I think Gio’s done a really good job adapting to the trucks and his consistency this year has obviously been impressive with him contending for top fives every week,” TRICON driver coach Trevor Bayne said.

“But his personality – there’s not many like Gio. NASCAR talks a lot about needing unique personalities and he’s one of those guys."

However, the 19-year-old driver could have added one more win to his name and improved his position in the standings if NASCAR had not made a brutal mistake.

Gio Ruggiero shared his thoughts after a costly NASCAR mistake

During the recently concluded Bully Hill Vineyards 176 at the Watkins Glen last Friday, NASCAR punished Gio Ruggiero with a restart penalty. Ruggiero was leading the race, ahead of Connor Zilisch, but fell prey to the restart penalty nearing the end of the race, and was put in 17th place.

“I think it was just a bad call, obviously. I didn’t jump the restart. I think we just gave the No. 11 team a nice gift there. We definitely would’ve won the race or had a close battle with the No. 71," Ruggiero said about the race.

“Really unfortunate from a points standpoint. Everybody on this team works really hard and puts all their time and dedication into this," Ruggiero, who came home in 15th place, further added.

Before this, Gio Ruggiero, who lost the race because of the penalty, confirmed that the governing body admitted that they were mistaken. However, it was just a plain apology, with no further action.
