NASCAR’s RCR Unveils Six-Wheel ‘Mothership’ at Marine Expo Debut

In a defence market that is filled with concepts and prototypes, Richard Childress Racing turned up to the Modern Day Marine show floor with a six-wheel platform that is turning heads.

The team that won 6 titles with Dale Earnhardt and 15 across the three tiers of NASCAR has been moving towards defence equipment manufacturing, merging its high precision engineering for racing with the same need for building defence equipment.

RCR turned up with a 6-Wheeled-Adaptable Platform at the Marine Expo in Washington, D.C., called the Mothership. It's a term justified by its ground mobile platform, meant to be integrated with advanced defence technologies. Mothership is set to serve as a mobile base for launching both drones and missiles.

Mothership is described by RCR as a “launch-anywhere” capability across multiple domains. It shifts far away from what the public expects to see under the banner  RCR Manufacturing Solutions.

What made the Mothership a special exhibit was its previous appearance, a successful Lockheed Martin demonstration. Mike Verlander, President of RCR Enterprises, LLC, spoke about the connection between RCR’s racing heritage and defence ambition.

“Using the same manufacturing, machining, and engineering capabilities that drive our race teams and engine company, RCR Enterprises is becoming a trusted integrator in the defense space, particularly in ground mobility, as proven by our recent successful Lockheed Martin JQL VL demonstrations.

Mothership is described as lightweight and modular, qualities that the Marine Corps prioritizes in ground vehicles, with an eye out for its intended purpose of expeditionary operations.

“This lightweight modular platform defines adaptability and aligns itself with the Marine mentality of doing more with less,” said Verlander.

The Lockheed Test Stamp

While the Mothership perfectly aligns with Marine mentality, it stands out because it has already demonstrated the defensive capabilities it boasts. Ahead of its public launch, it took part in a joint demonstration with leading aerospace and defence company Lockheed Martin.

Mothership was used as a ground-based mobile unit for Lockheed Martin’s JAGM Quad Launcher(JQL). During the demonstration in January, it was successful in providing a stable base for a 90-degree launch of the Joint-Air-to-Ground Missile.

Richard Childress Racing has been moving into the role of a defence equipment manufacturer since 2014, but their focus on building parts and equipment for not just defence but also aerospace solutions increased after the introduction of the Next Gen car in 2022, which reduced the team’s role in building their own chassis.
