“She understands the grind”: Kyle Larson grateful for wife Katelyn amidst hectic race schedule

NASCAR's race calendar already leaves drivers with little time away from the track. But for Kyle Larson, the workload is even more with the dirt races and marquee events that he takes up on the side, which fill nearly every gap in his schedule. And something like that could only work when his loved ones speak the same language.

On the latest episode of Racin’ With The Boys, Larson said that is exactly where Katelyn Larson matters, saying, “She understands the grind.”

Before her union with Kyle, Katelyn Larson was Katelyn Sweet, the sister of sprint car racer Brad Sweet. In fact, Larson met Katelyn through Brad at a racing event.

Larson explained, “Yeah, I mean, speaking from my situation, yeah, it is perfect. Like, yeah, I am so fortunate that my wife grew up around racing, and she gets the grind, she knows it.”

The background that Larson refers to isn't that of a casual racer. Brad Sweet's official World of Outlaws profile lists him with 93 career wins.

Larson, too, has faced his own grind, winning NASCAR Cup championships in 2021 and 2025. Terming it exactly, Larson added, “Her brother ran on the World of Outlaws tour for, gosh, 10 years. They race way more than I do. They’re 90 nights a year,” on the Racin’ With The Boys podcast.

Now, even though Larson credits, in part, Sweet's racing career with granting him a more cherished family life, the latter's accomplishments often go unnoticed. So let's take a look at how he fared.

Brad Sweet's dirt empire explains why Larson's family knows the grind

Brad Sweet stands as the strongest link behind Larson's point and what he desired in his ideal family. Throughout his career, Sweet has amassed 93 World of Outlaws career wins and has won at least one Outlaws feature in 15 consecutive seasons.

His résumé gets even better, having claimed five consecutive World of Outlaws championships from 2019 through 2023. Sweet and Kasey Kahne Racing also added the 2024 High Limit championship to their long list of accolades, marking their sixth consecutive national championship.

Even in NASCAR, Sweet debuted with ARCA and Truck starts in 2009 before later running partial Xfinity seasons in 2012 and 2013.

This showcases exactly what Larson meant regarding the “90 nights a year” schedule that his wife Katelyn was accustomed to. It was this exact experience that he now credits with helping create a household that understood the demands of his racing career.
