When Dale Earnhardt Kicked Out Dale Jr's Friends and Taught Him a Tough Lesson

Dale Earnhardt Sr. lived up to the name of ‘The Intimidator’ both on and off track. However, when it came to supporting his son, the racing legend knew exactly how to get through to Dale Jr.

During the early days of his Cup racing career, the 2021 NASCAR Hall of Famer struggled to get sponsors despite his legendary last name. At the Busch Series at Charlotte, Dale Sr. managed to get his son a sponsor. But as soon as the race began, Dale Jr. wrecked the car.

The disappointed racer went back to his trailer with his friends to drink his sorrow away. But what followed was an incident neither his friends nor Dale Jr. himself would forget. In the 2025 documentary Earnhardt, Dale Jr. recalled what went down.

"All of a sudden, the door flies open on this double-wide trailer I lived in. Boom, boom. I know immediately those are Dad's footsteps," Dale Jr. said. "He looks over at my buddies that are sitting over there, and he goes, ' Get the f*** off my property. Them motherf****** ran out of the house and jumped in the cars, and they drove out to the driveway. The shoes are still sitting in the floor."

Dale Jr. explained that he thought his racing career was over. But the seven-time NASCAR champion gave him the words of encouragement and reassurance his son needed at the time.

“He's [Earnhardt Sr.] like, 'No, they're going to fix that car. That's where you should be. You should be wanting to fix your car. Where is that? Where is that inside of you? What's missing in you that you thought to come over here and sit on your a** and feel sorry for yourself?'," Dale Jr. recalled.

Looking back on the incident, Dale Jr recalled how this was one of the conversations that stuck with him all through his career.

Earnhardt Sr's pep talk revealed the soft-hearted fatherly side of his personality. But to know how the racer became 'The Intimidator', fans would have to go back another generation.

How Dale Earnhardt Became ‘The Intimidator’

Ralf Earnhardt, Dale Sr.'s father, played a major role in shaping the Dale Earnhardt that NASCAR fans know.

It all began in 1972 during the race at Metrolina Speedway, where the father and son raced together. However, Ralf had an advantage due to his V8 engine.

In a video aired on Dirty Mo Media, Dale Jr. described the battle between his father and his grandfather, which turned out to be an entirely different sort of life lesson.

“He [Ralf] went wide, too, and then he hits dad from behind. So now dad’s [Earnhardt] looking behind him, he’s trying to figure out what’s happening, and his dad hits him again. Dad starts to realize this isn’t going to stop. Ralph was trying to teach him something: you don’t move over for anybody,” Dale Jr. said.

The lesson learned during this race helped him develop a fearless and aggressive approach to racing. It motivated him to become ‘The Intimidator’, a force to be feared on the racetrack.
